Alere i RSV detects respiratory syncytial virus RNA in nasopharyngeal swab samples. The molecular assay runs on the Alere i instrument and gives a qualitative result. It aids diagnosis in symptomatic children under 18 and adults aged 60 or older, alongside clinical and epidemiological information.

The sample is added to a receiver and moved into a disposable test base containing dried reagents. Isothermal amplification increases the viral RNA target, and fluorescent probes detect the amplified material. The instrument heats and mixes the sample, reads fluorescence and reports the result.
