The CarbonAid CO2 Diffuser delivers carbon dioxide into the open chest cavity during open heart surgery. Cardiovascular surgeons use it to establish a local carbon dioxide atmosphere in the surgical wound, displacing air around the operative area. It is a disposable surgical device connected to a gas supply.
Gas travels through tubing to a medical foam diffuser that spreads the flow at a low outlet velocity. A thinner tube containing a stainless steel wire holds the diffuser in position within the wound. A plastic disc connects the foam to the tube and encloses the wire’s distal end.
Gas Path
A hydrophobic filter with 0.2-micrometre pores separates the gas source or humidifier from the wound. The diffuser foam is elastic and hydrophobic, helping it continue passing gas when it contacts fluids such as blood.
