The Gems Vitrification Set prepares human blastocysts for rapid cooling in liquid nitrogen during assisted reproduction procedures. Increasing concentrations of cryoprotectants withdraw water from the cells and reduce the potential for ice-crystal formation during vitrification.
The set contains three solutions. Vitsol 1 and Vitsol 2 use a HEPES-buffered base with salts, energy substrates, amino acids and human serum albumin, with ethylene glycol and, in Vitsol 2, trehalose. Vitsol 3 contains dimethyl sulphoxide.
Preparation Required
The set is not ready to use as supplied. Vitsol 3 must be added to the other vitrification solutions before the procedure, creating the final cryoprotectant mixtures. Separate warming solutions are used for rehydration after vitrification.
