Smart Sync synchronizes MRI acquisition with a patient’s heartbeat using Doppler ultrasound. It generates cardiac gating signals for compatible 1.5 tesla and 3 tesla MR scanners when compensation for heart motion is needed.
An ultrasound sensor is positioned over the heart and secured with a flexible belt. Reflected Doppler signals identify the cardiac cycle, and the system sends a trigger for each heartbeat to the MRI scanner through a wireless connection.

smart-sync is an MRI-compatible Doppler ultrasound system that determines the cardiac cycle of patients and synchronizes it with the MRI imaging. smart-sync can be used for the synchronization of the heartbeat both for fetuses and adults. The heartbeat of the patient is detected by positioning an ultrasound sensor above the patient’s heart. The ultrasound sensor is fixated with a flexible belt. The reflection of Doppler ultrasound signals is analyzed, and a trigger signal is derived for every heartbeat. smart-sync sends the Doppler ultrasound signal and the trigger signal (synchronization signal) to the MRI scanner utilizing a wireless connection.
Patient and Imaging Scope
The system supports adult MRI and fetal examinations from the thirtieth gestational week. It is intended to reduce motion artifacts in requested MR examinations that require heartbeat synchronization. It is not intended to monitor physiological parameters.
